Swedish Cast-Ons and Knitting Technique
Date: Saturday, Mar. 6th
Time: 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Cost: $75
Skill Level: All
# Seats : 20
Five cast-ons from Sweden will be taught in this hands-on class. They are all one-needle cast-on methods, and can be adapted for one or two color edges for sweaters, mittens, socks, and hats. In addition, the Continental method of knitting, purling, and weaving will be taught as a basis for the Scandinavian technique of working with two yarns in the left hand (knitting, purling, and weaving) and Twined knitting (two yarns in the right hand). Small sample swatches will be made using all of the techniques learned in class.
Materials needed: Two contrasting colors of the same weight yarn, either sport or worsted weight; a pair of appropriately sized 12" or 16" circular or short straight needles. (Example: 4.5 mm or 5.0 mm (US size 7 or 8) for worsted yarn, 3.75 mm or 4.0 mm (US size 5 or 6) for sport yarn.)
Optional: Hang tags for labeling samples.
An Introduction to Twined Knitting
Date: Sat, Mar. 6th
Time: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Cost: $75
Skill Level: Intermediate. Must be comfortable with double pointed needles or working with two circulars. Ability to knit English style (yarn held in the right hand) is very helpful, but not required.
# Seats : 20
Curious about the 400 year-old Swedish technique of Twined Knitting? In this three hour class, knit one of a pair of wristers while learning a traditional cast-on, twined knitting, twined purling, and patterning (the "O" stitch, the Crook stitch). Learn how to manage your yarns so that untwisting becomes a cinch! Reading Twined Knitting charts is also included.
Materials needed: one skein of worsted weight wool yarn, preferably light colored. The skein must be wound as a center-pull ball because you will be working with both ends. No single ply yarns!; one set of size 6 or 7 (4 or 4.5 mm) double pointed needles or two circulars of any length; stitch markers, sticky notes or a magnetic board to keep one's place on the chart.
Seamless Arans
Date: Sun. Mar. 7th
Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Cost: $150 (includes lunch)
Skill Level: For beginning Aran knitters. Students must know how to cable, be proficient with double pointed needles, or, if preferred, use the Magic Loop or two circulars.
# Seats: 20
Arans are the well-loved sweaters from Ireland which are characterized by creamy white yarn, cables, bobbles and other deeply textured patterns. Students will knit a mini-sweater circularly in class to learn to work from a chart while creating different traditional patterns (bobbles, traveling stitches, cables) as well as seamless construction methods used for circularly-knitted Arans. Emphasis is placed on the saddle shoulder style of Aran.
Materials needed: 3 to 4 oz. light colored heavy worsted weight yarn; one 16" circular needle, size 7 or 8 (4.5 mm or 5.0 mm); one set 7" long (or shorter) dp needles, size 7 or 8 (4.5 mm or 5.0 mm); stitch holders, st markers, cable needle, tapestry needle; magnetic board or sticky notes to keep your place on the graph; optional: If you are not used to working with Aran charts, you may want to bring three differently colored high-lighters to mark the symbols on the chart.
This class has homework to be done before class.
