Beginning Knitting Project Session

Friday Nite Techniques - Basic Seaming

Date: Friday, Oct. 3
Time:  6PM - 8PM
Cost:   $30
Basic Seaming - We'll practice seaming techniques and discuss when to use them.
Materials needed: All students should bring at least 4 swatches, 2 in garter stitch and 2 in stockinette stitch, tapestry needles, and scrap yarn. Please use worsted weight yarn in light colors.

Kids Knitting

Date: Monday, Oct.6, 20
Time:  4:40PM - 6PM
Cost:   $30
This class is for ages 7 to 12 that would like to learn to knit or improve basic knitting skills. Learn to cast on, knit, and cast off to make a wonderful project. Materials will be provided and include needles and yarn for practice and a beginning kit.
Materials Fee: $12.50

Intro to Hand Spindling Workshop

Date: Monday, Oct. 13
Time:  Noon - 5PM
Cost:   $75
This class focuses on the fundamentals of spinning with a hand spindle, also known as a drop spindle. Learn to make a singles yarn on a top-whorl spindle. Bottom-whorl spindles will also be discussed. We'll also cover a brief history of hand spindles, how finish your yarn, how to measure how many yards you've spun, and a learn simple method for gauging your yarn's grist compared to commercial yarns.
Materials needed: Drop spindle. Other materials provided by instructor - cost $TBD (<$30)

Beginning Socks

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 14 , 21, 28 & Nov. 4
Time:  6:00 PM- 08:00 PM
Cost:   $100
Handknit socks offer a whole new world of color, texture, and size for your feet.  The basic sock pattern you will learn is one the teacher learned from a knitter in Newfoundland .  It can be knit on any yarn from modern finger weight sock yarn to warm worsted weight yarn for a hiking sock that lasts for years. 
Materials needed :  At least 400 yds sock yarn; one set of dpns size 2-4

Friday Nite Techniques - Short Rows

Date: Friday, Oct. 17
Time:  6PM - 8PM
Cost:   $30
Short Rows (used for shaping) - We'll practice short rows and discuss how to adopt them in existing patterns.
Materials needed: Bring worsted weight yarns (multiple colors) and appropriate needles for swatching and playing.

Chemical (Acid) Dyeing

Date: Saturday, Oct. 18
Time:  10AM - 4PM
Cost:   $125

Materials needed: Bring worsted weight yarns (multiple colors) and appropriate needles for swatching and playing.

Color in Spinning

Date: Thurs. Oct. 9 & Fri. Oct. 10
Time: 7PM-8:45PM
Cost: $60
Mix and spin a color wheel of fiber.  We'll start with dyed fiber and blend it into new colors.  Then we'll spin the final results.  As you try different blending techniques, you will see how they affect the yarn you make.  Fiber provided.  
Materials needed:   spinning wheel and notebook.  Also useful are hand carders, flicker or combs.  At least one of each will be available during the class.

Knitting in the Round

Date: Tuesday, Oct.21
Time:  6PM - 8PM
Cost:   $30
Knitting in the round is a valuable skill for knitters to master. Seamless sweaters, hats and mittens are all made using this method. Learn to knit in the round and all the tricks to using double pointed needles and circular needles while completing a project of choice. Students must have firm grasp of knit, purl, cast on and bind off.
Materials needed: Bring to class worsted weight yarn, DPNs, & tapestry needle.

Beginning Knitting

Date: Thursday, Oct. 24, 23, 30 & Nov. 6
Time:  10 AM - Noon
Cost:   $100
This is a basic learn-how-to-knit class. Beginners learn the basics of casting on, knitting, purling, and casting off while creating a garment of their choice. We’ll also cover other techniques such as increasing, decreasing, and pattern reading. Students pay for materials they use.
